Topsider Talks with Wallis Mills

As a community leader — involved with both the book and wine clubs in Delta Coves — neighbor Wallis Mills champions building community through getting to know your neighbors. Delta Coves Community Life chatted with her about life in our pocket of the world and how neighbors can be a part of Delta Decanters or Club Book Cove.
Tell us about yourself.

I am originally from Boston, Massachusetts, and work as a marketing strategist specializing in AI and accelerated computing. I value family and friends above all, and consider myself to be a foodie, oenophile, lover of the arts, a voracious reader, writer, producer, and designer.

How long have you called Delta Coves home?

As of this October, I have called Delta Coves home for two years.

What do you enjoy most about living in Delta Coves?

I enjoy the peace and beauty. I call it a little pocket of paradise. The water and mountain views never get old. The true bonus has been having such wonderful and considerate neighbors.

What are some of your favorite memories and traditions here?

Some of my favorite memories have been the times I have spent with the members of Club Book Cove and the Delta Decanters. I have also really enjoyed the music series in the summer at Island Camp — such a wonderful environment to meet and catch up with my neighbors.

What inspired you to move to Delta Coves?
Funny enough, the initial prompt was an Instagram ad. I was looking to buy a home and property on the water seemed a bit unbelievable. I drove out on my day off, and fell in love with the place immediately. Delta Coves also made it simple — no lotteries, no bidding — all I had to do was decide.
What do you think makes Delta Coves a great community?

The scenery is amazing, but the people are what make it a great overall community.

What is your favorite book or book genre?
I tend to lean into non-fiction — business and behavioral science. For fun, I might read historical fiction or a dystopian tale or two.
What makes a good wine to you?

I tend to have a Bordeaux palette. I like wine that pairs well with food, but can also be enjoyed on its own.

How can a neighbor become involved in wine or book club?

You can email me directly. Also, for book club you can find Club Book Cove on the ‘BookClubs’ app for the latest updates, selections, to make suggestions, and the discussion guide for what we’re currently reading. For the wine club (Delta Decanters), we don’t have an app, but we post updates on the official Delta Coves Facebook page with details and instructions on how to participate — so keep an eye out for those.

What is it about the clubs that you enjoy the most?

I enjoy getting to know and spending time with my neighbors. It makes it easier to connect when people can come together around things they enjoy and have in common.

But most of all, I have to say I don’t organize these clubs alone. I have been able to make friends with very wonderful and talented women including Mariann McGee and Min Park who co-organize wine club with me and Mika Smith who co-organizes book club with me. I couldn’t do it without them.

Do you have a favorite community event?

So far, the music series in the summer is my favorite.

Any thoughts on encouraging neighbors to become community leaders?

Being a community leader and bringing folks together goes a long way toward creating a neighborhood where people support one another and resolve differences in a more effective manner, even when the events are offline. Do what you can when you can — even if it’s quarterly — and you don’t have to run a club to be a community leader. Just be someone who cares, helps, and shows up. We’re better together.

What are your favorite water activities?

I enjoyed kayaking back in New England. I haven’t gotten to it here yet, but hopefully soon.

What other clubs and activities are you involved with within the neighborhood or Delta?
I am not involved in any other clubs yet, but I am curious to see what the craft club will be working on — and have heard about some good ones that should be popping up soon.
What’s an interesting fact others might not know about you?
Ask me about the origin of my name — it’s a pretty cool story. 😉
