Winterizing your boat

When fall arrives, the incredible California Delta weather begins to slowly change. Some boaters may continue to use their boat throughout the winter months, but many will stop boating to take on winter activities.

If you’re planning to keep to land this winter, it’s time to prepare your boat for the cold, damp Delta weather. You have some decisions to make.

Do you leave your boat in the water or pull it out of the lagoon and rent indoor storage? If you decide to move your boat into storage, revisit how to Store Your Watercraft With Ease blog. If you decide to keep your boat on your dock, please consider the following:

  • Check for standing water anywhere on your watercraft. Stale water makes a great hatching ground for pesky mosquitos.
  • Cover your boat to reduce exposure to the elements. Your cover should be waterproof and water-tight.
  • If covering your boat, consider adding a dehumidifier or two in the boat to prevent the upholstery from mildewing.
  • Hoists will raise your boat out of the water and protect your hull.
  • Freezing temperatures are very seldom in this part of California, but it’s still a good idea to winterize your engine; drain the water from the block to avoid freezing.
  • Add a fuel stabilizer to your fuel system.
