When winter fades and spring temperatures warm to summer, boats come out of hibernation to enjoy the water once more. Just as important as winterizing your boat, preparing your boat for the summer season minimizes your chances of missing out on the fun or needing a rescue on the ‘high seas.’
Before you venture into the Delta, consider these pre-boating checks:
- Thoroughly clean your boat inside and out.
- Inspect your vessel for cracks and dried out plugs or seals.
- Ensure plugs are in place – especially if stored off site or out of the water.
- Complete a tune up – flushing fluids, swapping out spark plugs and filters, and testing battery power.
- Verify safety measures are functioning and/or onboard.
- Look over your boat registration card and sticker, Boater Card(s), and Quaga sticker for valid expiration dates.
- Set reminders to remove standing water to prevent mosquitos during boating season.
Bonus items to keep onboard
In addition to what's required by law, consider adding these to your boat pack.
Extra boat plugs, extra impellers, stocked first aid kit, back-up water bottles
All boating equipment should be in working order, safety equipment and required documents onboard, and Coast Guard approved life jackets should be properly fitting and free from damage.
For more information on boat maintenance and repairs, chat with a local marine service center.
And, don’t forget to brush up on parking and storage guidelines within the community to stay compliant this boating season.
